The “First Friday Sing” (Glasgow)

On the first Friday of each month, since 3 August 2012, we have had an informal evening singing. We sing from from 7 to 9.30pm, with a tea-break. All are welcome, no experience necessary, and copies of the Sacred Harp (2025 edition) are available to borrow or buy. For many years we met at the Quaker Meeting House in Elmbank Crescent, but as of January 2026 we have moved to a new venue:

St Ninian's Scottish Episcopal Church, 1 Albert Drive, Glasgow G41 2PE

The nearest railway station is Pollokshields East on Albert Drive, five minutes by train from Central station, and buses 3, 38, 57 and 59 go past on Pollokshaws Rd. The what3words locator is ///shady.output.loud.

Though the songs are almost all Christian, this is not a service or religious event, and religion is not discussed. Members of all faiths and none are welcome.

There is no charge for participating, but we ask those who are able to put perhaps £5 or £10 in the hat, towards the cost of room hire. Don't worry if you can't contribute.

An informal list of what was sung at each singing can be found here.

FAVOURITE SONGS
Here are some of the Glasgow favourites, in case you'd like to have a look at some songs in advance. Many if not all can be found on YouTube, or see the links to recordings at the bottom of this page.

47t Primrose (YouTube)
86 Poland (audio)
99 Gospel Trumpet (audio)
117 Babylon is Fallen
146 Hallelujah (audio)
178 Africa (audio)
347 Christian's Farewell (YouTube) (audio)

Not every song we sing will necessarily be from the Sacred Harp. Singers are welcome to bring along songs from other collections such as the Shenandoah Harmony or Christian Harmony, or their own shapenote compositions. About 20 copies would usually be needed in Glasgow.

Some of our own (old) recordings can be found on our Soundcloud page at http://soundcloud.com/shapenotescotland/
